Frequently Asked Questions
-
A business advisor is a trusted, outside partner who helps leaders think clearly about important business decisions. The work may involve strategy, financial management, operations, organizational structure, growth planning, or a specific challenge that needs careful attention.
At Catalyst and Company, advisory is practical and tailored. We begin by understanding your organization, the decision in front of you, and the context around it. From there, we help you clarify priorities, assess options, and move forward with an approach that is grounded, workable, and measurable.
Business advisory is not a substitute for legal, tax, accounting, engineering, or other regulated professional advice. When a decision requires specialized advice, we help identify the questions that should be brought to the appropriate qualified professional.
-
The right focus depends on your organization and the decisions you are facing. Catalyst and Company may support work such as:
Strategic planning and business planning
Financial operations, budgeting, forecasting, cash-flow planning, and decision support
Project delivery, procurement, and implementation planning
Operational reviews, process improvement, and practical systems
Organizational structure, role clarity, hiring-process foundations, and team effectiveness
Sustainable development, ESG readiness, stakeholder priorities, and performance measures
Growth decisions, partnerships, funding readiness, and change initiatives
The goal is not to add complexity. It is to create the clarity, structure, and momentum needed to make a well-considered decision and carry it through.
-
Accounting and advisory can work very well together, but they serve different purposes.
Accounting commonly focuses on recording transactions, preparing financial statements, meeting tax and reporting obligations, and explaining historical financial results. Business advisory uses financial and operational information to help leaders look ahead: understand options, plan for change, test assumptions, manage risk, and make decisions with greater confidence.
For example, an accountant may prepare or review year-end financial statements. A business advisor may help leadership use those statements, current cash-flow information, and operating assumptions to decide whether to hire, invest in equipment, pursue a new contract, adjust pricing, or sequence a growth plan.
Catalyst and Company does not replace your accountant, lawyer, or other trusted professional. We can work alongside them to make sure business decisions are informed by the right expertise.
-
The terms sometimes overlap, and the right model depends on the work.
Business advisory is often an ongoing or decision-focused relationship. It emphasizes context, leadership judgment, practical planning, and support through important choices over time. Management consulting is often engaged for a defined project, operational issue, analysis, or implementation effort.
Catalyst and Company can provide both strategic guidance and hands-on project support when appropriate. The engagement is designed around the problem you are solving, not around a label.
-
Organizations often seek advisory support when they are:
Starting, growing, restructuring, or entering a new stage of operations
Preparing for a significant decision, investment, opportunity, or partnership
Experiencing cash-flow pressure, uneven revenue, margin concerns, or uncertainty about financial direction
Building a business plan, operating plan, budget, forecast, or performance framework
Taking on a major project, procurement process, funding application, or implementation initiative
Preparing to hire, clarify responsibilities, strengthen a team, or improve how work moves through the organization
Responding to customer, lender, procurement, community, or stakeholder expectations related to sustainability or reporting
Facing competing priorities and needing an outside perspective to determine what matters most
You do not need to be in crisis to benefit. Often, the best time to seek support is before a decision becomes urgent.
-
Every engagement begins with a conversation about your organization, objectives, constraints, and the decision or opportunity at hand. We then establish a practical scope, priorities, roles, deliverables, timeline, and way of working.
Depending on the engagement, the work may include research, analysis, stakeholder conversations, financial or operational review, facilitated working sessions, decision frameworks, planning documents, implementation tools, or ongoing advisory meetings.
You can expect a structured, transparent process and recommendations that are clear enough to use. Our role is to bring order to complexity while respecting your organization’s knowledge, responsibilities, and capacity.
